I used 29 Scales Brushes For Photoshop by fantasio to make the cheap weave on the halter.

"Now you be good, big guy," James warned as he unclipped Rahl's lead. It was the laced stud's first show in which he had to do more than run at liberty. There were mares around, geldings, and other stallions, and Lord Rahl would be required to stand still, ignoring them all.

It was usually against his nature, growing up as he had, a valuable breeder, with little training, and no incentive to care about what any of the humans thought. He was accustomed to only being one-on-one with mares, required only to leave them unmarked, and otherwise doing as he wished. Not that he didn't wish to be with the mares, that was how he had most of his fun.

But at his new home, he was required to earn his keep in another way. He had done some exhibition jousting locally, and behaved reasonably well in small groups of strange horses, though they were usually geldings, and he had worn heavy armor, which discouraged fighting with hooves, as it made rearing a challenge.

On this spring day, he wore only a simple green halter. James, his new(and first) rider, had walked him out into the ring. "Just stand still boy. No one is expecting miracles, we're mostly here to let you practice. Watch the others, they're more experienced, and stay calm. We brought 6 horses to this show last year, and no one placed. The competition is stiff."

Rahl stared around, staying as calm as he could. James' voice had been quiet, soothing. All he had to do was stand still until James came back. None of the other stallions at the show made a threatening move. The mares smelled really good, but they were tacked and on their best behavior, and James would be cross if he went after one. Anyway, there was a fence in the way, so he decided chasing an uninterested mare, which would only get him in trouble, wasn't worth the effort.

James watched Rahl. Please, please, let the fractious stallion behave. Prizes didn't matter here, only the experience his rather strange Valentine present would gain. They had only brought Rahl and a cute little peafowl filly for a reason. The barn was busy this year, with lots of new foals, and a potion show hosted by the Nordanner studbook was keeping Deana busy this month. There simply weren't hands to spare. He crossed his fingers. The stallion stared across the fences at the other horses, but didn't move.

Long seconds ticked by. Rahl stood still, only his flickering ears betraying his inexperience.

Thank you! Thank you! The man thought silently when he returned to the ring to collect his stallion. He patted Rahl's nose. "Tonight, my boy, you get carrots and sugar cubes with dinner. You did marvelous!"
