Rained Out“As you can see- it’s raining.” The woman commented with a bland expression as she hid underneath the treeline, the sand before them was wet with rain that had been steadily falling for at least a half hour. Her green eyes narrowed suspiciously as she held the Faime’s halter, the Chocolate Palomino Chipmunk mare was currently begging for face scratches. A quiet nicker left her muzzle as she pressed more into her handler’s touches. Her pale mane was braided, her tail left untouched as the rain continued to call. The air was filled with the smell of the sea and fresh rain. The woman’s companion held an excited Noir Féerie Boucle stud, the 16 hand creature gave a fling of his massive head. He was careful not to hit the other woman; a girl with pale blue eyes and raven hair. “Come now, Rain won’t harm us.” She called back, a smile growing as the rain picked up in strength. “Plus, we have a week here. It’s not like it’s gonna rain again.” The companion had a point as she steadied the stallion and mounted the creature’s drenched back. His ears pricked forward and started to do a side stepping motion; his blue, pink, and yellow striped tail was flagged as he craned his neck. Athya looked down at the Chipmunk mare before sighing and leading her out, grimacing when rain started to sink through her shirt and pants. “You have a point but you do realize that I can’t ride her.” She gestures to the 7 hand mare. “You’re damn lucky that I have a driving rein on here.” Athya couldn’t help but shake her head as she gently fixed her position on the reins, the mare perking up and giving a few happy nickers and trotting forward proudly, a soft snort was given in response to the other duo. The mare seemed to be quite pleased with herself and the attitude she gave- was quite cute for such a small creature.Karliah simply shook her head and turned the sixteen hand stallion away from her companion, the stud’s hooves sunk within the wet sand. There was another fling of the stallion’s head as he started to trot forward, feeling the resistance underneath. The black stallion gave a gently grunt before picking up an easy canter, the rain falling onto his face- never giving it any mind as he let himself be guided around and cantering back to the other. A crooked smile played on Karliah’s face as she gently pulled back on the reins, slowing the stallion down to a slow walk. The wet cat look that Athya gave her was- beautiful to say the least. “It looks like you’re enjoying this, given that you have a personality of a walnut right now.” Karliah teased with a light laugh, her smile crooking to one side as the other simply gave her the bird before walking off and towards the waterline. “Walnut my ass!” Athya called back, scowling as she let the mare guide her to just shy of the waves and gave a snort at the smell of the sea air. The clouds around them grew darker and the sound of thunder rumbled in the distance. “We really should head back though, the storm’s rolling in and training today is pretty much non existent.” She called out, tilting her head back and watching Karliah lead Skyfall to the water's edge. “If there’s any training to be had, it will be a cold day in hell if I get this pretty gal to work with us you know. She’s frisky for something so short and small. I’m used to the draft Faime’s not- mini’s. Are you sure that they’re not demon incarnate?” The pinned ears were enough to tell her that the comment was rather offending to the mini mare before her. “I’m sure, trust me. If they were demon incarnate, the others would have raised quite the stink about them being such a thing.” Karliah simply shook her head and let the stallion dip his hooves into the water before wading deeper into the chilled liquid. “We could do something with ground manners, even in the rain.” her gold eyes looked down at the soaked coat of the horse underneath her. The stallion simply shook his head and started to trot around the mini faime and it’s disgruntled human. His tri colored tail swayed in the near gusting winds as he picked up his legs, horn glinting in the dim lighting of the storm. “Even if we did that, you know damn well that we wouldn’t get far with that. The storm is a bit too strong to do something even remotely nice with all things considered. We should find shelter and wait it out.” She saw the other’s skeptical look but to be frank, wasn’t too keen on getting even more soaked. The mini mare gave her the pinned ears again and stomped her little hooves in the wet sand. “Oh don’t give me an attitude.” Athya scolded, gently nudging the demon mare’s head away from her hand and looked out towards the ocean. “I didn’t want to be stuck with you so the feeling’s mutual.” She did her best to keep the sassy mare in check as she turned on her heel and started to make her way back to the treeline. The wind howled with each step, barely able to make out what the other could be saying to her. “Yeah, yeah. You’re right.” Karliah commented, letting her horse follow after the pair and gave a tiny shudder as the rain finally started to seep into their clothes, chilling their smaller body to the bone. “Do you think that we could find a campsite or something?” She knew it was a bad idea to even go and suggest such a thing since the wood would have most likely been soaked and unable to handle a flame for an extended period of time. She let the reins loosen as the stallion gave a soft knicker to the mini mare who was not having it. The mare simply flung her tiny head and stomped her hooves in slight retaliation to her handler. “... You can’t be serious. The wood would be soaked, let's find a cave or something. We need to get out of the rain before we catch something.” Athaya gave a shake of her head, her hair clinging to her face, her Green eyes started to scan the forest, leading the mare deeper into the treeline and muddy ground. “If we find dry wood, you better have something to start the fire, I don’t have anything that would help with our current situation.” She continued to grumble as the pair pushed deeper; the air around them grew colder. She could almost see her breath as she continued to lead the way, nearly tripping a few times in the mud. Soon enough, there was a group of caves that came out of the Cliffface; The ground was soaked all to hell but there was something almost comforting about finding solace in this sudden and unexpected storm. It was odd to have a rainstorm like this out of season, at least in severity. The clouds had thankfully started to lighten in shade but the rain was intense as ever, almost stinging as it fell from the sky above them. The pair thankfully rushed inside the nearest cave. Letting their charges go and sitting against the dry stone wall. Athya Gave a groan as she looked around, spotting a few logs of wood, dry and unburnt. The hope of getting dry was a welcomed one with how the day was going. Karliah gave a quiet hum, dismounting from the tall boucle stallion and walking to the pile of logs, kneeling before them and well- inspecting them. Her fingers curled around a bit of dry tinder before it ignited, her magic lighting the wood and soon enough the pile. “It shouldn’t take long for the heat to come in, I’m glad the caves are dry and not flooded.” Karliah murmured, moving to sit next to Athya and let her head fall back. Her gaze falling to the mini Faime mare and the stallion. The two of them seemed to enjoy the growing warmth of the flame just as much as the humans were that was for sure. A small yet barely there smile grew on her lips as she thought back to their little fiasco. “I really messed this one up huh?” A low chuckle was the woman’s response, “Yeah, you did. We saw storms on the horizon when we were leaving the barn. Why didn’t you just suggest riding in the indoor arena?” Athya couldn’t quite understand that, sure it could get boring indoors but it was safer than trekking out into the woods and getting soaked to the bone. Sometimes the other didn’t quite think their plans through and to be honest it was a little endearing to think about it. “Well- I thought that the rain would let up, just a tiny bit or you know- wait a few hours before coming. It was nice out and I didn’t want to be huddled up in the barn with Siren and the others. Can you blame me?” She countered, giving a gentle frown and running her fingers through her damp hair. Her eyes dropped to her lap, fiddling with the soaked cloth of her shirt while absently chewing at the bottom of her lip. “Mh- no I can’t. I know how boring it can get when there’s nothing to do and we don’t have orders. The boss and his little crew have been gone for a while and truth be told, taking care of all of the horses back at the stables is- not exactly my cup of tea.” Athya gave a tiny shrug before grabbing the edge of her shirt and starting to wring out the fabric, watching the water fall onto the dirt ground before them. “I think what we should do now though is to take care of one another until the storm lets up… and I think that will be a while before that happens. The clouds didn’t look too excited to let up anytime soon.” All she got was a hum before shuffling was heard, she didn’t look to her side but the wet shirt that landed on the dirt was quite telling on what happened. “I-You did not just take off your shirt Karliah…” She drawled, looking at the object before looking back towards the fire. She couldn’t help but pinch the bridge of her nose as she shook her head. “I sure did. It’s better to let it dry out than be wearing it and causing me even more risk to get sick.” Karliah quipped before getting to her feet and sitting close to the fire, laying her arms on her legs and looking down at the burning wood. Her brows were drawn into a worried line as she reached up, pushing her hair back and shaking her head. “Sometimes I wonder though. We have over fifty Nordanners, twelve faimes, and four boucles. Why though? We don’t exactly have the manpower to ride each and every one of them.” “It could be diversity, do you remember how last year it was just one thing and now it’s multiples. It could be that they wanted to expand and not exclude anyone. Trust me, seeing that many horses is less than ideal with such a small crew but it is nice though. We don’t have to ride the same horses every day.” She let herself smile as she looked at the Boucle stallion and the mini faime mare, watching as they simply dozed off from a hard day's work of riding and trailing through the various mountain passes. Perhaps Athya was wrong about the mare, they do seem to have a lot more in common than what she had originally thought. “But for now, we should rest and make sure that these two don’t cause a scene when the storm rises up. Karliah gave a quiet chuckle and a nod of her head. “Sounds good to me.”1: 2,034 words and a handler
